A lipid profile is a group of blood measurements commonly used when assessing cardiovascular risk. Reports may include total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
Why is a lipid profile ordered?
Clinicians may request lipid testing during routine screening or when monitoring patients with risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, family history or existing cardiovascular disease.
Is fasting always required?
Not every lipid profile requires fasting. The correct preparation depends on the clinician’s request, laboratory protocol and the clinical question being evaluated. When fasting is requested, follow the stated time carefully.
What can affect results?
Recent meals, alcohol intake, acute illness and some medicines can influence lipid measurements. Do not change medicines without medical advice.
