Ultrasound Preparation: When Fasting or a Full Bladder May Be Needed

Ultrasound is a widely used imaging technique, but preparation is not the same for every examination. The instructions depend on the body area and the clinical question.

Why might fasting be requested?

For some abdominal ultrasound examinations, fasting may improve visualization by reducing bowel gas and changing how certain organs appear. The required duration should be confirmed when the appointment is arranged.

Why might a full bladder be needed?

Some pelvic or urinary tract ultrasound examinations can require a comfortably full bladder because it helps create an acoustic window and improves visualization of pelvic structures.

Follow the exact instructions for your scan

Do not assume that instructions from a previous ultrasound apply to a new study. Confirm the preparation for the specific examination ordered by your clinician.

What should you bring?

Bring your prescription, relevant previous imaging or reports if available, and any information requested by the imaging team.

Contact SMDC before your visit if you are unsure about preparation or appointment timing.
